The team at Canagan contacted us to ask whether we would like to try a sample of the their food – food you say? Always an easy answer for me!

Alan & I were sent 3 small bags of their dried food for small dogs, the flavours were Country Game & Free Run Chicken.

Even the bags smelt good!

Canagan say:

All dogs are the direct descendants of grey wolves domesticated by our ancient forefathers, and their dietary needs have remained virtually unchanged to this day.

Traditionally dog and cat foods have sacrificed nutritional value by using cheaper, less nutritionally accessible ingredients. Our nutritionists have looked carefully at the dietary needs of cats and dogs to produce a food which more closely mimics your pet’s ancestral diet with the correct ratio of meat protein and fat to carbohydrate and a much higher meat content than most.

What we liked the sound of was the fact that their food is grain free, perfect for my brother Alan who we suspect suffers from seasonal alopecia and Mum has found his hair to better when fed grain free food.

Dogs and cats are highly adapted to eat meat. Like all carnivores, they find it more difficult to digest grains. This is highlighted because they don’t have the enzyme called amylase in their saliva, which helps to break down these starchy carbohydrates.

We have eliminated all the grain from our recipe to create a food that is high in meat which matches as closely as possible their natural food.

Grains such as corn, wheat and barley have been linked with canine allergies, with symptoms ranging from upset stomach to itchy flaky coat. Even if your pet has no allergies, these grains are significantly less digestible and have limited nutritional value when compared to meat, yet, they are present in the majority of pet foods.

Both the flavours we were sent were for small breeds specifically, perfect for our small mouths (or snorkel nose in Alan’s case). They also do a size for regular dogs in chicken, country game, salmon & lamb flavours and a large breed in chicken flavour.

We decided to try a flavour each, I went first with Country Game with Duck, Venison & Rabbit. This flavour is made up of 65% nutritious animal ingredients & 35% vegetable & botanicals.

I like to check the ingredients first, this ones contains freshly prepared duck & venison, sweet potato, seaweed & more! It sounded very enticing…

Alan chose to try the Free Run Chicken flavour, it seemed right up his street…

This one is made up of 60% nutritious animal ingredients & 40% vegetable & botanicals, freshly prepared chicken, sweet potato & seaweed.

And now for the important part – the taste test!

The biscuits are exactly the right size for us small pooches, they have a small hole in the middle, are so crunchy and delicious!

Alan got stuck right in there, hoovering those biscuits up like an ant eater!

And I of course scoffed the whole lot savoured every morsel…

Both Alan & I agreed we both really enjoyed Canagan food & would definitely recommend it if you are looking to feed your small-breed dog (or any size dog for that matter!) a healthy, nutritious grain-free food.
