It has a sausage dog on it! So we speculated what this book could possibly be about & what a sausage dog has to do with an octopus?
So Mum & I did some further investigation, cracked the book open and started our journey with Lily…
Lily is a dachshund who was the runt of the litter and she chose Ted herself when he went to pick his pup. The book picks up when Lily is 12 years old, Ted is a lonely man and Lily is his world, his everything. They have a very special, strong bond, that Mum & I, and many other human-dog relations, can relate to.
Check out one of the best character names in the book…
We follow a journey with the characters after Ted discovers the ‘octopus’ one day. Lily has her own dialogue, a lot like myself, and we learn about the different pastimes she partakes in with Ted, including Monopoly and movie-pizza nights.
Without giving too much away, as we don’t want to spoil the story for you, we can say that it’s a very witty, humourous and emotional read and anyone that owns a dachshund, or any dog for that matter, can really relate. From the way Stephen has written about Ted & Lily’s special bond, you just know it is written from the heart and his own experiences with his own Lily. It’s a heartwarming story but also teaches us a lesson in letting go, not just people but our pets too. We have to treasure our special moments together and learn to love again once we have grieved.
It’s not often Mum reads emotional books however she did have a little cry at this one, I just sat patiently by her side whilst she read to me and stumbled over a couple of the chapters, reading with a voice thick with emotion. It’s ok though, I cuddled her just that little bit tighter and licked her tears away.
A brilliant book that we thoroughly recommend everyone reads, just be prepared to go through that emotional rollercoaster and have some tissues at the ready!
Dach’s all for now – off to give my Mum a cuddle…
